Treatment Options

The choice of treatment for external genital and perianal warts is based on the number, site, and size of the warts as well as patient preference, cost, convenience, side effects, and physician experience. Warts may be frozen with liquid nitrogen and removed or treated with a variety of medications, such as Aldara Cream, that are applied directly on the warts either by the physician or by the patient.

You should talk to your healthcare provider about the treatment options for external genital and perianal warts. All treatments have advantages and disadvantages including side effects, the number of treatment sessions required, and the likelihood that warts will come back.

Aldara Cream is a skin-use only (topical) medicine used to treat external genital and perianal warts in people aged 12 years old or older.

When using Aldara Cream, the most common side effects involve skin reactions in the application area. These include redness, swelling, a sore, blisters, or ulcers, skin that becomes hard or thickened, skin peeling, scabbing and crusting, itching, burning, and changes in skin color that do not always go away.
